Why ISO 9001 Certification?

ISO 9001 certification relates to the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system (QMS). Organizations use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. The ISO 9001 standard helps organizations to organize processes, improve the efficiency of processes, and actively pursue continuous improvement.

Wind River Linux is based on a foundation of open source community innovation.  The challenge is to build processes around rapidly changing deliverables, while also focusing on building best-in-class products. Wind River Linux development and maintenance processes are certified to the ISO 9001 QMS standard. The certification covers the design, development, integration, verification, validation, and maintenance of open source technologies when packaged into Wind River Linux.

Many of the hallmarks of ISO 9001 align with those of our  goals –  customer focus and satisfaction, executive management involvement and support and a commitment to continuous improvement. At Wind River, ensuring quality includes building in a set of measures, processes, etc. that draw from  our technology heritage of  nearly 40 year , while constantly striving to be better than our competition and deliver outstanding products to exceed our customers’ expectations.

Linux Quality Management System

We established our QMS using Sphinx (front end) and SVN (back end/Configuration Management system) which was well received by the team and our customers. We defined the core processes to reflect the way we worked and ensured that it is also compliant with the ISO 9001 requirements. Making a transition from a set of TWiki pages to a formalized quality system wasn’t a big step to the team.  With 100% process automation with the tools, a dedicated team committed to quality and management support, implementing the Linux QMS was a cakewalk!

SQA Auditing and Continuous Improvements

Since the beginning of our ISO 9001 certification journey, regular Software Quality Assurance (SQA) internal audits (phase-end/sprint-end) were essential in order address all our process issues and ensure process compliance all the way. We achieved the great feat of “zero noncompliance” in the certification audit followed by two zero noncompliance surveillance audits and attribute this tremendous victory to our regular audits and continuous process improvements identified and implemented by the team.

How does ISO 9001 certification benefit us and our customers?

Wind River Linux, the market leader in its category, is one of the first few products in the market to achieve ISO 9001 certification that harnesses the Open Source technology and Agile Development Methodology. Our clients request an industry-standard compliant QMS, and ISO 9001 Certification helped satisfy our customer expectations.   We use ISO 9001 certified QMS processes to plan and execute our software development activities.

As mentioned, ISO 9001 helps increase consistency, quality, customer satisfaction and can contribute positively to a company’s bottom line, all of which can further increase credibility for products like Wind River Linux.  This certification by an accredited external auditor conveys to our customers the compliance to a QMS, lifecycle (core) and support processes of the software product development. Customers can use our certified product with confidence for further development and certification efforts on their end.

We’ve been fortunate to have a strong team to help us through our ISO 9001 journey. Everyone on the team was instrumental in helping to define and implement our QMS:

  • Management Support:  Steve Long, Davide Ricci
  • Engineering SQA – Shree Vidya Jayaraman, Naomi Lee
  • Linux Engineering (NA): Jyothi Bhattaram, Mark Hatle, David Reyna and Kishore Parwani
  • Linux Engineering (CDC): Zhangle (Eric) Yang, Zhenfeng (Jeffrey) Zhao, Yue Tao, Xin (Lucy), Li

What’s lies ahead?

The ISO 9001 certification is not intended to be a standalone milestone. We are already on board with our ISO 9001 recertification audit that is planned for the first quarter of 2020. Also, we are planning for additional certification initiatives to establish our presence in other market-specific industries. With our quest to deliver continued excellence for our customers, Wind River approaches certification as an ongoing effort.
